  • Was I in the wrong for taking back the birthday cake I brought to my sister's party?

My sister had a birthday party at her house last weekend. She told everyone not to worry about bringing food because she had everything covered, but I like baking, so I spent most of Saturday making a homemade chocolate cake anyway. She said thanks when I arrived and put it on the kitchen counter.
  • A little later I overheard her telling a few relatives that the cake was from the local bakery because she "didn't want people asking for the recipe all night." I laughed at first because I thought she was joking, but she kept saying it. every time someone complimented it.
  • Eventually one of my cousins came over and asked which bakery she bought it from because it was really good. Before my sister could answer, I said, "Actually I made it." She rolled her eyes and said, "Does it really matter?"
  • I told her it kind of did since I spent hours making it. She shrugged and said nobody cared where it came from and I was making a scene over dessert. That annoyed me, so when the party started winding down, I packed up what was left of the cake and took it home. There was still about half of it left.
  • The next day she texted me saying she planned on sending slices home with people and that taking it back was childish. My mom also said I should've just left it there because it was a birthday gift once I brought it.
  • I don't think it's unreasonable to take back something after the person spends the whole night pretending they made or bought it themselves. c. Am I the j ?
  • TL;DR: I spent hours baking my sister a birthday cake, she kept telling everyone it came from a bakery, so I took the leftover cake home after the party. Now my family says I was petty.

  • Commenters sided with the brother, and wondered what was going on.

of2minds2 What a weird thing to lie about. Does she lie all the time?
  • spaceylaceygirl Was it petty to take the cake back? Yes. Do i approve because your sister was acting like a j ? Absolutely.
  • Callilunasa Petty? Yes. But Not the j If someone can't appreciate your time and effort they shouldn't have it. Also, I'm guessing you got her a separate present so this technically wasn't a gift as such.
  • pandora5bc NTJ your sister is so jealous of you that she couldn't even acknowledge your done something nice the her!
  • ChicagoWhiteSox35 NTJ. She was super r de. I don't understand why she would tell everyone that it was from a bakery when you made it. She just didn't want anyone to compliment you? That's weird.
  • If my sibling made me a birthday cake, I'd be telling EVERYONE "OMG xyz made it, isn't it fabulous!? They're SO talented!" Instead, your sister tried to hide the fact that you brought that cake. And then she was mad when you took it home? Nope. I'd take it too.
  • PetiteGardener144 Ntj. Tell her to go buy another one from the local bakery.
  • RefugeefromSAforums I would've left with the cake before it was even served.
  • HappySummer Breeze NTJ but next time when she says dont bring anything then dont bring anything
  • Elegant-Survey-2444 NTJ. Why didn't ungrateful sister just send people home with slices of the cake she had purchased for her own birthday party, since she served yours?
  • plodding-along-more If she said to not bring anything, why did you? If you are an excellent baker then whatever she has will be c py compared to yours. You're making her feel bad.
  • Acrobatic_Macaron_91 She knew it was a great cake and a big deal. But she didn't want any attention on anything but her.
  • OrangePinkyToe Sister said "Does it really matter?" then when the cake is gone it really matters. Mom was trying to keep the peace but seems to have failed parenting with that sister if she does not know how to tell the truth.
  • tjk45268 If it were me, I'd skip her next birthday. Oh, sorry, I have another commitment with someone who is not an a.
